Notes | Crazy flower for koto and vocal At the time he wrote this Japanese song, the composer was intrigued by thoughts of an invisible and unconscious realm that exists behind the mundane life. for example, death is a concept we rarely see or think about consciously, but we are aware that it exists. In this song, the composer considers how a similar realm exists in language. Certain sounds that existed in old Japanese such as wo, wi and we are no longer used in modern Japanese. However, the sounds still exist in the spaces between words when pronounced very slowly. in his song, the composer focuses on this idea and requires the vocalist to employ and vowel define the essence of the Japanese singing style. This piece was composed for the dance performance “Debris of Heaven” at the Hara museum in Japan. [notes from CD vista] |
