Notes | In spirals, written in Summer 2007, symbolizes endless variations and repetitions of one idea in the human mind. The text in the three-movement piece In Spirals consists of the composer’s interpretation of poems written by Carolyn Ramzy. The first movement attempts to evoke a journey from reality to a dream-like world. The main subject of the first movement moves from one state of consciousness to another – ‘sleep and unsleep’ -unsleep being a reference to that state where the mind is neither awake nor in deep sleep. The second movement presents variations of the subject mentioned above within a different musical context. Here, the lapse between the two states makes a reference to the human heart beats, which can be metaphorically perceived, as the human longing for the sense of being and the longing for immortality. The last movement deals with the realization of the eternal fear of loneliness, emptiness, and mortality. [Michaela Eremiášová] |
