Notes |
Because of the way the instrument is played – a rather percussive plucking of the strings with artificial nails – the koto is not usually thought of as a lyrical instrument. However, it was precisely this lyrical, song-like quality that I became interested in while writing Koto, Bass Koto. This piece was composed with the generous support of the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. |
